September 6th Star Party is ON!

Cloudy skies today are expected to give way to clear skies well before sunset, which will be at approximately 7:19 PM. The waning crescent Moon sets at approximately 4:50 PM - well ahead of the Sun - and does not rise again until after 2:30 AM, so it will have no impact on the views tonight. Astronomical twilight ends at approximately 8:53 PM, at which point M57 (Ring Nebula) and M13 (Hercules Cluster) will be high in the sky just west of the meridian, making this evening an ideal time to observe these two objects. Hoping to catch a glimpse of Saturn now that its rings are at a more favorable angle? Your astronomy app will show Saturn rising at 8:30 PM, but it will need additional time to clear the trees at the eastern end of the parking lot before it is visible; you can expect to spot the ringed planet over the trees around 10:00 PM or so.

Much cooler temperatures are expected this evening than we've had at our last few star parties, starting around 68°F at sunset and dropping into the upper 50s as we approach midnight. We typically recommend dressing for weather 10 to 15 degrees cooler than forecast, so consider digging your winter jacket out from the back of the closet; you can always leave it in the car until you want it. Long pants and warm footwear are recommended as well. If you choose to use insect repellant, please apply well away from telescopes.
